Call for Konqueror related GSoC 2010 projects

I really wonder why there are no Konqueror related idea for a GSoC 2010 project in the KDE Community Wiki.

The last opensuse version ships Firefox as default browser, there are some other attempts of a kde based browser (rekonq, etc.), but I think that nothing can replace Konqueror in the next time concerning consumption of resources. Konqueror is so fast using pdf viewer KPart Okular while Firefox almost hangs up with proprietary plugin adobe reader. Which other browser can split its view and show pdf viewer and webpages at the same time? KatePart is also very handy.

I mean it’s wrong to think that other Qt based browsers can replace Konqueror in the next time. Even the inexperienced user wants to use KPart Okular.

However, I use Firefox, because it doesn’t use kthml has awesome bookmark tagging and can be synced with Mozilla Weave. It would be nice to see these features prospectively integrated in Konqueror, too.

What do you think? Can we bring Konqueror to the next level?

There are a number of things I would like to do with konqueror but I don't have time to play through the full src nor would I want to wait for change to trickle through into distros.

But I would love to write plugins and extensions, however the documentation for that is practically non-existent. Some guides and decent docs for konqueror 4.4 plugins - extending or changing the ui, adding new behaviours etc would make a huge difference.

Eventhough I like Konqueror I can honestly say I've never used its KPart-embedding capabilities. If I want to view a PDF document I want Okular opened as a standalone application just like anything else, so that I can manage it using my window manager. I find the capability cool though, but nothing that I'd use. The problem with Konqueror that makes me use Chromium instead is that it has too many rendering problems with the sites I use frequently.

As Konqi is still my default browser I'd love any improvements it can get. A WebKit backend is on top of my list, as that would mean I won't need Chomium for a few websites anymore :D

But what would konqi need in terms of improvements? If browsing was faster and more reliable in terms of rendering, I'd be perfectly happy with konqi as it is...

Konqueror's kpart love is great! Okular rocks, Kget rocks and kwebkitpart is nice. All it needs now is some modernized ui for web browsing and all the usual suspects like "speed dial", tabs on decoration, maybe some better/modern extension system using GHNS (btw could it be made to use chrome's javascript extensions in anyway?), smarter location bar like "awesome bar" and maybe better bookmark handling.

Yup there're lot's of stuff that could be done, but so few who can :(

I do research so I'm constantly looking at pdf's, ps's and dvi's. I also look at source files a lot. Both my laptop and desktop are over 4 and a half years old. The desktop only has 512MB Ram. Yet, I couldn't care less about embedded okular or kwrite in my browser. Sure, if I have them is nice, otherwise no big deal.

This is not about Konqueror being replaced in "the next time". It happened already. Get on with the times.

Yes i think we can bring it but we must work on KHtml Module because QtWebkit is more powerful. And improve some of messagebox like a plugin finder or codec finder. I just have competence in Qt Development and try to get family with Kde so i don't think i can be useful in GSoC...maybe can i help Konqueror why not ;)

There was a GSoC project to move Konqueror's bookmarks into Akonadi; I wonder what became of that. If bookmarks, form data, browsing history etc. were in Akonadi, writing a Weave resource for Akonadi should be relatively easy.

I stopped using Konqueror because four very important sites to me do not work with it, two of them work with Konqueror-3.5.10 but not with any of the 4.x versions. What I saw in the past years is Konqueror working good with 99% of the sites, but the 1% that do not work properly are very important sites to somebody, so it does not matter if it work with 99% it must work with the sites we use. Five years ago I did not have problems to access sites with Konqueror but now every year one or two sites stop working with it and never come back to work, and yes, there are several bug reports in bugs.kde.org about those problems, several of them with years and no solution yet. I just gave up to wait and switched to Firefox some years ago but never like its performance, now I am using Chromium as my main browser. I still have 32-bit Firefox and jvm to access one of those four sites because it does not work with 64-bit jvm. Chromium is very fast and has clean interface that almost just works, that is good. Unfortunately its download manager sucks, it is unreliable, download speed measure is flaw, the resume feature does not work if there is a temporary link shortage, so I prefer to use Firefox to download big files.

I do not see how to ressurect Konqueror, there are several other better alternatives out there and very few people interested in working on Konqueror by what I see. A browser is something that must work, it is not something we use because we like it, we use it because we need it and if does not work we just find another one that works and forget about the other. I think that is what happening with Konqueror.

Nevertheless I think our good old default kde browser is worth to get "resurrected". In my opinion these new browsers, namely rekonq for instance, are a kind of forks and forking is a bad thing which only should be the last option.

I can tell you why. Because you haven't added any. Even by now. Everybody telling everybody else to do something will not get anything done.
